Good preparation begins with a clear agreement about who is handling each part of the project. Before moving everything in sight, confirm what the painting scope includes and what your painter expects you to handle.
1. Decide exactly what is being painted
Make a room-by-room list. Note walls, ceilings, doors, frames, baseboards, closets, built-ins, or accent areas separately. This prevents small surfaces from becoming last-minute surprises.
2. Share photos and surface concerns
Photos help show layout and general condition. Point out stains, peeling areas, cracks, holes, previous repairs, water marks, or anything else that may affect preparation. A photo does not replace an in-person review when one is needed, but it is a useful starting point.
3. Confirm furniture and wall-hanging responsibilities
Ask what should be removed from the room, what can be moved toward the center, and who will handle heavy items. Take down art, mirrors, curtains, and delicate decor if those responsibilities are assigned to you.
4. Create clear access
Clear walkways to the rooms, doors, and surfaces included in the project. Identify parking or entry instructions and share any gate, building, elevator, or neighborhood access requirements ahead of time.
5. Plan for children and pets
Painting involves open doors, equipment, drop cloths, and unfamiliar activity. Make a plan that keeps children and pets away from active work areas and gives the crew reliable access.
6. Confirm colors, finishes, and labels
Before work starts, confirm each color and finish and where it belongs. If several similar colors are involved, label rooms or surfaces clearly so the plan is easy to follow.
7. Ask about daily cleanup and room access
If the project spans multiple days, discuss where materials will be stored, which rooms remain usable, and what daily cleanup looks like. This matters even more when you will be living in the home during the work.
8. Save the final walkthrough for good lighting
Walk through the completed scope with the painter. Review the surfaces from normal viewing positions and note any agreed touch-ups while the project details are still fresh.
